After the call: support for first responders

Employee: 3.5- 4 hour instructor-led workshop; People leader: full day instructor led workshop
For people leaders and employees

The Mental Health and Resilience for First Responders Program helps these professionals to cope with the unique and often stressful or traumatic nature of their jobs. Designed to sensitize employees and people leaders to the topics of mental health and resilience in the workplace, the program helps raise awareness of mental disorders as well as focuses on reducing associated stigma. It also encourages individuals to take responsibility for their own mental health as well as supporting co-workers and providing a safe environment for those needing help

Employees: Participants complete a 2.5- to 3-hour workshop on mental health and 1-hour workshop on resilience.

People leaders: Participants complete a 3.5-hour workshop on mental health and a 3.5-hour workshop on resilience.

The workshops are comprised of theory, discussion, and interactive learning activities, including role-playing to practice how to respond to a peer or team member experiencing a mental health problem. With the proper training, they will be able to:

  • Explore the most common mental disorders experienced in the workplace, specifically Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
  • Learn why certain professions are more at risk
  • Understand the impacts of trauma in the workplace and the importance of getting help early on
  • Recognize the signs of mental health issues at work and how to respond
  • Identify tools and resources for recovery (e.g., a PTSD self-assessment)

Learning objectives

Once individuals complete the program, they will be able to:

  • Demonstrate understanding of their role in managing their mental health
  • Develop techniques to help build resiliency against mental health issues
  • Recognize stigma surrounding mental disorders and describe strategies to reduce/eliminate it
  • Identify when someone (self, colleague, or team member) is struggling and respond appropriately
